PlayStation Eye

プレイステーション Eye

A digital camera peripheral for the PlayStation 3 with improved video capture and a four‑microphone array supporting motion‑based gaming through PlayStation Move and augmented reality titles.

Description

The PlayStation Eye was the successor to the PlayStation 2’s EyeToy. It was designed to expand the PlayStation 3’s capabilities in video communication, motion tracking, and interactive gaming. The device featured a custom sensor capable of capturing video at VGA (640×480) resolution at 60 frames per second or QVGA (320×240) at 120 frames per second, with enhanced low‑light sensitivity that allowed it to function effectively in dim environments.

A distinctive feature was its manual zoom lens, offering both a 56‑degree close‑up field of view for video chat and a 75‑degree wide‑angle mode for gameplay. The inclusion of a four‑microphone array enabled advanced audio processing, including noise cancellation and echo suppression, which improved voice chat and supported experimental voice recognition. The PlayStation Eye was bundled with The Eye of Judgment, a trading card game that used the camera to recognise physical cards placed on a mat, blending real and digital play. It later became central to the PlayStation Move system, tracking the glowing orb on the motion controller to enable precise 3D input. Other applications included EyeCreate, a simple video editing tool, and family‑oriented games such as EyePet.

While it didn’t get the mainstream hype of Microsoft’s Kinect, the PlayStation Eye continued Sony’s interest in augmented reality and motion‑based interaction. It was a forward‑looking but niche accessory that showcased experimental uses of camera technology on the PS3, particularly with PlayStation Move controllers, which would later be re-purposed for PlayStation VR alongside the PlayStation Camera for PlayStation 4.
