Mouse
An official Nintendo accessory, primarily bundled with Mario Paint, which I did own when originally released. It allowed players to interact with creative and simulation software on the Super Nintendo using a point‑and‑click interface. PAL region version.
Description
The SNES Mouse was designed to resemble contemporary PC peripherals, connected via the controller port and came packaged with a grey mouse pad. The accessory was most famously used with Mario Paint, enabling players to draw, animate, and compose music with far greater precision than a standard controller.
A small library of Super Nintendo titles supported the Mouse, though only many were release in Japan only. Beyond Mario Paint, many strategy and puzzle games. These included: Civilization, Eye of the Beholder, Lemmings 2, Jurassic Park, King Arthur’s World, Mario’s Super Picross, Populous II, SimAnt, Utopia, Vegas Stakes, Wolfenstein 3D, and Wonder Project J. The mouse functionality was not just optional but often not even an advertised feature.
The SNS‑016E designation refers to the PAL version of the mouse, distributed in Europe and Australia. It is visually identical to the NTSC model but region‑coded for local consoles. Despite its limited software support, the mouse opened up the system to support alternate interfaces, foreshadowing later creative peripherals like the DS stylus and Wii Remote.
