The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

ゼルダのでんせつ ティアーズ オブ ザ キングダム

An action‑adventure game that continues Link’s story after the defeat of Calamity Ganon, with Ganondorf returning as the central antagonist. It builds on the open‑world design of Breath of the Wild while adding construction mechanics, vertical exploration, and a darker narrative tone.

Description

Tears of the Kingdom began development as an expansion to Breath of the Wild before evolving into a full sequel. The story opens with Link and Zelda exploring ruins beneath Hyrule Castle, where they encounter the mummified Ganondorf. His awakening shatters the Master Sword, corrupts Link’s arm, and causes the Upheaval, a cataclysm that tears Hyrule apart and raises islands into the sky. Zelda vanishes, and Link must master new powers granted by the mysterious Zonai technology to restore balance.

Visually, Tears of the Kingdom uses the same art style as its predecessor but pushes scale and verticality further. The world from Breath of the Wild is now enhanced into three interconnected layers: the surface now reshaped by the Upheaval with altered geography, new settlements, and dungeons; sky Islands, floating landmasses filled with puzzles, shrines, and Zonai devices; and the Depths, a vast underground realm shrouded in darkness, where players must manage resources like Brightbloom Seeds to survive.

Gameplay innovations define the sequel. The Ultrahand allows players to manipulate and combine objects, creating vehicles, bridges, or weapons. Fuse lets weapons and shields be combined with materials for durability and creativity. Ascend enables vertical traversal by passing through ceilings, while Recall rewinds the movement of objects. These mechanics encourage experimentation, making traversal and combat highly flexible. The game retains shrines, Korok seeds, and side quests, but expands dungeons into larger, themed temples with regional storylines. Boss encounters are more elaborate, and companion characters temporarily join Link in battle. The crafting and building systems, inspired partly by community creativity in Breath of the Wild, became a defining feature, allowing players to solve challenges in wildly different ways.

Reception was overwhelmingly positive. To put simply, this was a masterclass on how to take a title already widely lauded as one of the greatest of all time and provide a sequel that expanded and improved on it in most ways. Commercially, it was a phenomenon: over 10 million copies sold in its first three days. By March 2025 it had surpassed 21 million units, making it one of the Switch’s best‑selling titles. Tears of the Kingdom is regarded as a landmark in open‑world design, not just for Zelda but for the genre as a whole. Its emphasis on player creativity, layered exploration, and systemic freedom cemented it as one of the defining games of the decade.
