Tales of Destiny

テイルズ オブ デスティニー

The foundational 32-bit entry in the long-running RPG series, introducing the sentient Swordian levelling system and high-budget animated cinematics. It established the franchise’s identity on the PlayStation with fast-paced, real-time combat and a deep, character-focused narrative.

Description

Tales of Destiny is the second entry in the series and the first title developed specifically for 3D hardware. While it is the sequel to Tales of Phantasia, that received a 3D remake a year after Destiny released. Developed by same Wolf Team, the game moved away from the storage constraints of 16-bit cartridges, utilising the CD-ROM format to integrate high-quality audio and the first of the series’ iconic animated opening sequences produced by Production I.G.

The narrative follows Stahn Aileron, a young drifter who discovers a sentient, talking sword named Dymlos, a relic from an ancient war known as a Swordian. Stahn eventually joins forces with other Swordian masters, including the mercenary Rutee Katrea and the brooding knight Leon Magnus, to stop the resurrection of the Eye of Atamoni, a power source capable of global destruction. The story focuses on the relationship between the warriors and their sentient weapons, exploring themes of duty and the burden of power through a character-driven script emphasised by the series’ signature Skits (Face Chat) system.

The gameplay introduced the Enhanced Linear Motion Battle System (E-LMBS), which refined the real-time, side-scrolling combat of the original game with increased movement speed and more complex aerial maneuvers. The defining mechanical addition was the Swordian System, where the sentient weapons level up alongside the characters, allowing players to customize elemental spells and physical techniques directly through their equipment. This system created a unique progression loop where the weapons themselves were as central to the strategy as the characters wielding them. The game’s technical presentation was praised for its detailed 2D sprite work and vibrant environments, which stood out during an era when many contemporary RPGs were transitioning to early 3D models.
