ZombiU
A Wii U original survival horror game, remembered for its brutal permadeath system and its brilliant yet divisive use of the GamePad to create real-world anxiety.
Description
ZombiU is a flagship launch title and Ubisoft’s attempt to bring a “hardcore” survival horror experience to the Wii U. The game is a significant as it remains the most aggressive example of a developer utilising the Wii U GamePad as a mandatory, immersive tool rather than a secondary map screen. It is famous for its permadeath mechanic: when your survivor dies, they become a zombie in the game world, and you respawn as a completely new character who must hunt down your previous self to retrieve your gear.
The game is built entirely around the asymmetrical tension between the television and the GamePad. The GamePad acts as your “Prepper Pad,” functioning as a sonar, a lock-picking interface, and a sniper scope. A significant functional suite is the environmental scanning; players physically move the GamePad around the room to scan the in-game environment for loot. This created a genuine sense of vulnerability, as looking down at the controller meant you were blind to what was happening on the TV screen. The game runs at a native 720p30 and while it doesn’t boast the high-fidelity textures of later Wii U titles, it uses a heavy “dirty” film grain and dark, atmospheric lighting to mask the hardware’s limitations and heighten the claustrophobic feel of a post-apocalyptic London. The technical framework also included a unique online feature where your “zombified” friends would appear in your game world, carrying whatever loot they had when they died.
The reception to ZombiU was famously polarised, reflecting a deep divide in what players expected from a launch title. Critically, it was a “love it or hate it” game; some reviewers lauded it as a return to “true” survival horror where resources are scarce and every encounter is lethal, while others panned it for its clunky melee combat and punishing difficulty. Public sentiment followed a similar path with hardcore horror fans appreciated the tension of the Bug-Out Bag (the GamePad), which forced players to look away from the TV to manage inventory in real-time while the game continued to run. However, more casual players found the combat repetitive and the lack of a traditional pause button frustrating. Due to the limited commercial success of the game and the Wii U more broadly, the title was ported to other system in 2015 under the title Zombi. Although it was more mainstream with less criticism, the complete loss of the bag and GamePad feature stripped everything that made the game so special in the first place. In retrospect, only the Wii U version is worth a look at
