Dolby Digital

Dolby Digital, also known as AC-3, is a lossy compression technology supporting up to discrete 5.1 channel surround sound. It relies on psychoacoustic masking to fit within the bandwidth constraints of S/PDIF interfaces. Introduced during the sixth generation, the Xbox featured a hardware encoder for real-time 5.1 audio. The PlayStation 2 was limited to pre-rendered videos with AC-3 due to the encoding performance demands.
